Question 3GS, 5.1.1, 5.13.04 (recently downgraded from 6.15.00), DFU loop

I'm at my wits end. I've tried everything several times. Hopefully someone here has a clue as to what is going on. I've searched everywhere, on the web and in the forums.

My 3GS was on 5.0.1, 6.15.00 BB and was working fine. With the recent downgrade that became available I went from 6.15.00 to 5.13.04 and GPS was finally working great. So I decided now was the time to upgrade to 5.1.1.

Using redsn0w 0.9.14b1, I created a custom IPSW to preserve my BB. I actually wasn't sure if I needed to at this point, but I didn't want to risk a possible change in BB with 5.1.1.

So using redsn0w I pwn DFU and restored using iTunes with the custom IPSW. This is where it went awry. After the restore, iTunes said the phone was rebooting and to stay connected. It never rebooted and instead, stayed in an endless DFU loop.

I tried TU, recboot, redsn0w to try and get it out of the loop. I tried restoring using the custom 5.1.1 and 5.0.1 IPSW, stock IPSW, older 4.0.2 IPSW, nothing worked.

Then at one point, I couldn't even get it to recognize recovery mode and I couldn't boot it, restore it or do anything. I just got all sorts of errors from redsn0w and/or iTunes. I took it apart, physically detached the battery and waited. It took awhile to put it all back together since my hands are not adroit. I have no fine motor skills. It immediately went to DFU mode again. However, one plus was it was allowing me to try restores and the like again.

At some point, I was actually able to get redsn0w to boot it. It looks like 5.1.1 with my preserved BB actually got installed and is jailbroken. However, if I try to reboot it, it just stays in DFU mode. Essentially, at this point, I have a tethered 3GS on 5.1.1. and every time it turns off it goes into DFU mode and I have to use redsn0w to boot it.

I've tried Rocky Racoon to fix the tether and it doesn't do anything. I've installed it multiple times. I suppose I could live with a tethered phone but I'd prefer not to. Not sure if it was the 6.15.00 BB or 5.0.1 but my phone would crash around once a day. I can't take my laptop everywhere just to reboot my phone.

If anyone has an ideas, clues, suggestions, I'd be more than happy to try anything at this point.

Is it jailbroken? Have you tried allowing a clean 5.1.1 update (BB and all)? Or do you need the BB for unlock? If not, 5.1.1 is untether JB so restoring to stock 5.1.1 and JB with absinthe would be my recommendation.

Do an actual 100% legit restore of 5.1.1 via iTunes (not the custom ipsw), get it to boot normally.

jailbreak it untethered with absinthe2, then use redsn0w to flash the ipad BB again, then downgrade again.

    Then re-install mobilesubstrate and ultrasn0w.

I need the BB for unlock. Does 5.1.1 upgrade the BB? If so, can it be flashed to the Ipad BB? I can't risk being stuck on an unlockable BB.

According to the troubleshooting guide here- http://www.geekyapple.com/2012/06/ho...eband.html?m=1, yes. You can upgrade, jailbreak, flash ipad BB, then downgrade BB.

Strange, I was going to use my phone as is and try a stock restore later but as soon as I removed the USB cable, it jumped straight into restore mode. Is something else going on here? I'll try a stock restore for sure, now that it doesn't seem to be working at all unless connected.

    Just to update:

My laptop kept giving USB connection errors when trying to restore via iTunes. I used my wife's Macbook and it installed fine. I was able to then jailbreak and flash the BB with redsn0w and then downgrade the BB to 5.13.04 and everything seems to be fine now. I almost gave up because it seemed hopeless. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.
