    3g downgrade/jailbreak questions

This will be my first time "messing" with the old 3g, but have experience with modifying the EVO 3d. I've been reading a lot, and just want to make sure of a few things before I get to going. Currently the phone is 4.2.1, and has been in slow mode since a few ios updates before the current one. I will downgrade/revert back until it comes out of slow-mo speed (3.1.2 or 3.1.3 maybe?). Now..can this downgrade with recboot be done on any version of iTunes? I think I have the latest. Also, I assume do to hardware differences between iPhone and iPod touch, the iPod ios/firmware cannot be loaded onto the 3g to get rid of the phone options which aren't used and will never be (unless somehow new radios can be flashed to utilize Sprint cdma signal, then maybe, but still very unlikely). My main jailbreak question.... if I did jailbreak it, is there a way to erase certain apps/programs, or freeze them like with Titanium Backup (phone/sms stuff)? The 3g is only used by the boss and my kids, and only in an iPod manor for games and music. Thanks ahead of time for input.

You'll need a later version, though I'm not sure which iTunes was out when 3.1.x was released, and your correct about the firmware you can only use the one for your device.

And there are a number of apps that will let you hide icons.(won't appear on home screen)

    EDIT: jailbroken apps*

Downgraded to 3.0.1, the used redsnow to jailbreak. Things didn't work out as planned, but I got it done. BUT... the Cydia version redsnow loaded was the outdated and not useable. Wifi tethered through my Evo 3d, opened Cydia, went to "changes" and it began downloading all the new stuff (process that "how-to's" everywhere say to do it). No matter what it gets stuck on "Loading Data", and force closes Cydia app after awhile. I been looking around and can't figure out the fix. Cydia stays stuck at that point even after I reboot phone. I did another restore, as new phone. Then re-redsnowed. And tried again with no luck. What am I missing?

    3.0.1 ipsw
    05.15.04 modem firmware
    Redsnow 0.8

restore it with 4.2.1 or 4.1, if you wanna preserve your baseband use sn0wbreeze to create a custom firmware of one of those to and if you get an error when you shift+restore then google should walk you through it, if not then PM me and I'll help you through the errors.

So I assume that snowbreeze loads the more current version of cydia? What is the benefit of preserving the baseband? All I'm trying to do is get out of iOS 4 to get some speed back. Then I was going to use Cydia to remove some home screen buttons since the little guy doesn't need them. Basically tring to get the 3g as close to a ipod touch as possible. But if I have to go to 4.2.1 or 4.1, then I guess I have to. Thanks for your help, I will try this tonight.

yes sn0wbreeze loads the newest one on there. preserving baseband is for unlocking and such. sn0wbreeze does it automatically. no harm in it. also by using sn0wbreeze it adds cydia anyways so instead of installing the 4.2.1 or 4.1 firmware then using redsn0w you can just install the 4.2.1 or 4.1 custom firmware with cydia already on it
