I received a Iphone 3Gs phone from work for personal use. Our IT guy updated the phone to ios 5.1. I tried to jailbreak the phone to be used on Tmobile using redsnow 10.6 (vers). The first time I tried using redsnow, The phone is now in the "{activation) mode and will not recognize a sim card installed.
I understand that I may have to downgrade back to (ios) 4.3.5. Is this possible? How can I get from the activation screen.
HELP!!!
After you jailbreak, you have to unlock it before you can use different sims.
And since you got it already on 5.1. You can not downgrade to 4.3.5 as you don't have your shsh blobs saved.
I just tried restoring the iPhone 3GS by way of iTunes. It won't finish updating because it doesn't recognize the Simple Mobile SIM card.
Can you offer any advice on HOW to go about unlocking the phone...before jailbreaking it?!
I tried to save a SHSH blob before doing this (through a Cydia app) but it was unsuccessful because my firmware couldn't be signed.
Thx,
Ace
Only way to unlock without jailbreaking is buying a sim unlock tool that supports your baseband/device.
Get Tiny Umbrella and save your shsh blobs. If you have any below 5.1 then download that ipsw through the internet and get sn0wbreeze and cook your custom firmware and then put your phone into DFU mode then get and rub iReb and then go into iTunes and shift+restore and select your custom firmware. You're gonna wanna save your baseband(hopefully your IT guy already did that.) If he didn't then you'll have to select install iPad baseband in sn0wbreeze. Only install iPad baseband if your iPhone 3GS is either old bootrom or you know it has an EE baseband chip(I wrote a tutorial on this just look at my started threads). If you aren't compatible with iPad baseband and your baseband hasn't been saved and is not unlockable through ultrasn0w already then you can't be unlocked. If you tell me your baseband I can tell you if ultrasn0w can unlock it. ultrasn0w can unlock iPad baseband but you have to make sure your baseband chip in your iPhone 3GS is an EE chip OR you have old bootrom. Old bootrom means you're on EE chip, new bootrom means it could be debatable, you can find out for sure by opening your phone up and looking at the baseband chip and seeing if it is EE.

You can upgrade the abseband to 06.15 which is unlockable but you will an un-accurate GPS but you will get a unlocked iPhone and you can jailbreak and always use it. to jailbreak and unlock use custom ipsw made for iOS 5.1 with 06.15 baseband : Jailbreak iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS iOS 5.1 (semi-untethered) CUSTOM ipsw
