    Question about upgrading IPhone 3GS Baseband 6.15 to OS 5.1

    Hey everyone,

    Just got back onto an Iphone in the past few days. Have been away from the IPhone world for quite some time as I was on an Android. This post is a question with regards to how to go about updating an IPhone 3GS to OS 5.1. I don't need to unlock my phone I would just like to upgrade to 5.1 firmware.

    These are the stats of the device;

    Version: 4.1
    Modem Firmware: 06.15.00

    I have bought this device unlocked and jail broken on the above mentioned baseband and software and I am looking to upgrade to 5.1

    Anyone that can provide feedback or a safe and tested procedure please englighten I'm quite rusty as I have been off the IPhone for quite some time.

    Thanks everyone.

    Custom restore made with redsn0w or sn0wbreeze

    You can add cydia or just go for a custom stock restore.

    One question about making the custom IPSW.

    Would I have to initially use a 4.1 IPSW when asked by redsnow at boot, as that is what I am running at the moment?

    Also I tried running redsnow and I am asked whether or not I am running a 'newer' 3Gs model. I don't know exactly what this is supposed to mean or how to find this information. Perhaps if there is a tutorial around with detailed instructions on how to accomplish the upgrade, anyone could be kind enough to point towards it. I'd hate to attempt a flash or make a choice without 100 percent certainty and end up bricking a brand new device.

    Thanks for the quick reply

    No you just need to download the 5.1 ipsw then go into redsn0w and create the custom restore.

    If you don't want cydia then just don't jailbreak it afterwards as it'll be a tethered jailbreak.

    As for it asking about the manufacture date you don't need to worry that's for people installing the iPad baseband which is already on your iPhone just click continue.

    Thanks for the steps. I tried to download the IPhone 5.1 version IPSW titled 'iPhone2,1_5.1_9B176_Restore' but when I browse to this in Redsnow I get an error message that reads "Unable to recognize specified IPSW"

    I'm assuming there is no untethered jailbreak yet for 3GS running 6.15. I read somewhere that when upgrading to 5.1 baseband changes to '5.16.05' can anyone confirm this? or provide details?

    Thanks again.

    *Edit

    If it clarifies anything, here are the steps ive followed

    - Selected 'yes' for new 3GS prompt at the beginning
    - I am then given a selections menu consisting of;

    - Install Cydia
    - Install custom bundle
    - Install IPad baseband
    - Deactivate
    - Just boot tethered
    - Just enter DFU

    I'm not sure which selections apply to me. However the next step in the process asks me to put my phone into DFU and I have yet to create at all, a physical file to flash in 'restore'. I don't want to take a chance plugging in the device if it leads to a bricking incident.

    Can anyone also comment on warranty fixes and such when running 6.15. Does this effect service and support if the baseband can't be rolled back?
