to buy or not to buy? help please

hi, my friend has an iphone
his iphone works perfectly but the background light doesn't work anymore...
he would sell his phone to me for €30.

should i buy it? is it hardware or software error?
if it is hardware, how much would it cost to repair? if it is software, how can i fix it?
